iPad Screen Cracked? What to Do Before Repair

Darwin explains how to handle a cracked iPad screen safely, protect the data, and identify the exact model before repair.

A new Tamarac request came in for a tablet or iPad with a cracked screen. If your iPad glass is broken, don't keep swiping across it to see whether the touch still works. Apple says not to use an iPad with a cracked screen because it can cause injury. Protect your hands, keep pressure away from the glass, and get the exact model before asking about repair.

Safety first

Stop using the iPad if the glass is sharp or falling out, the case is bent or opening, the screen is lifting, the device is unusually hot, or it was exposed to liquid. Don't press it flat or charge it while damaged. If there is smoke, hissing or an immediate fire risk, move away and contact emergency services.

Don't press, peel, glue or heat the broken screen

Apple says not to use an iPad with a cracked screen because it may cause injury. Don't run your finger over the crack, pick at loose glass, add household glue or use a heat gun. A case can help contain small loose pieces for careful transport, but it does not make the iPad safe or repaired.

Keep the damaged iPad dry. Don't press the screen toward the battery or frame. If the display is lifting, the case is bent or the iPad is hot, stop using and charging it and call for a safe next step.

Get the exact iPad model and describe what still works

An iPad, iPad mini, iPad Air and iPad Pro do not all use the same screen assembly. The generation and screen size matter too. If the iPad is safe to use, check Settings or the original box. If not, bring the model number from the back or your purchase record.

Tell us whether the picture is clear, black, flashing or lined, and whether touch works everywhere. Also mention a bent frame, missing glass, liquid exposure, camera damage or a screen that is separating from the case. I would not promise a glass-only repair from the word ‘cracked’ alone.

  • Exact iPad family, generation and screen size
  • Whether the picture still appears
  • Whether touch works across the whole screen
  • Sharp or missing glass
  • Bent frame, lifting screen or liquid exposure
  • Whether the important files are backed up

Back up the iPad when it is safe to use

If the iPad is stable and safe to use, make a current backup before service. Apple explains how to back up an iPad with iCloud from Settings. Check that the backup finishes and confirm the important photos and files are included.

Don't erase or restore the iPad just because the glass is cracked. If the screen is unusable or the data exists only on this iPad, tell us that before work begins. A normal screen repair and a data-recovery evaluation are different priorities, and neither result should be promised before inspection.

Prepare for service without sharing passwords

Apple recommends backing up the device before service and removing cards and accessories. Apple may also ask you to turn off Find My for its service process. Don't remove the device from your account or change security settings until the repair path is clear and you know why the step is needed.

Keep your Apple Account password, iPad passcode and verification codes private. Don't put them in our quote form. Tell us whether the data is backed up and whether data preservation is the priority.

Call with the model and full damage list

Call Davie at (954) 669-9588, Tamarac at (954) 999-9662, or the Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop at (954) 242-8277. Tell us the exact iPad model, where the screen is broken, what happened, and whether the picture, touch, charging or frame also has a problem.

We can explain the next step after we know the model and condition. Parts, price, timing and repairability depend on the exact iPad and damage, so I won't promise them from one photo or the words ‘cracked screen’ alone.

Common questions

Can I keep using an iPad with a cracked screen?

Apple says not to use an iPad with a cracked screen because it may cause injury. Keep pressure away from the glass and arrange a safe evaluation.

Can Phone Repair Guy replace only the iPad glass?

That depends on the exact model and damage. The glass, display, touch layer, frame and internal condition must be checked before a repair path can be confirmed.

Should I back up an iPad before screen repair?

Yes, when the iPad is safe and usable. Make a current backup and verify the important photos and files. Do not erase the iPad just to test a cracked screen.

What information should I have before asking for an iPad screen quote?

Have the exact iPad model or generation, screen size, picture and touch symptoms, frame condition, liquid exposure history, and whether the important data is backed up.
