Broken iPhone Screen? Check Your Backup Before Repair

Darwin explains how to check an iPhone backup before screen repair, why a computer may still need working touch, and when to stop rather than erase the phone.

Before a screen repair, I want you to know where your important photos and files are. A cracked screen does not tell us whether the phone has a current backup. And plugging it into a computer does not automatically copy everything. Start with what you can verify, without pressing damaged glass or guessing at buttons you cannot see.

Safety first

Do not keep using or charging a phone with a lifting screen, suspected swollen battery, unusual heat or recent liquid exposure. Do not press the screen back into place. Safety comes before making a backup; ask for an evaluation if the phone is damaged or unsafe to handle.

If you can use the screen safely, check the backup date

Apple’s manual iCloud method is Settings, your name, iCloud, then iCloud Backup. On Wi-Fi, choose Back Up Now and let it finish. Check the date and time of the completed backup shown there. An enabled switch or an attempt that stopped is not the same as a finished backup.

If the screen has exposed sharp glass, unreliable touch or taps happening on their own, do not keep trying to navigate it. A backup is useful, but it is not a reason to press a damaged display or repeatedly enter a passcode.

Photos syncing to iCloud and an iPhone backup are different

Apple explains that iCloud Backup stores information that is not already syncing to iCloud. If iCloud Photos is enabled, those photos sync separately and are not included in the daily device backup. Seeing some old photos on another device does not prove the newest ones uploaded.

On another device you own and can access, check whether the specific recent photos or files you need are present. Do not delete anything while checking. Tell us what you actually confirmed, rather than assuming every item is protected because you pay for storage.

A computer backup can still need the iPhone screen

Apple’s Mac backup instructions use Finder on current macOS versions. Connect the iPhone, select it and follow the prompts. The process may require Trust on the iPhone and its passcode before Back Up Now can run. Check the completed backup date afterward.

Apple also says a Trust alert can appear during backups on iOS 16 and later. A computer you used before is not a guarantee that today’s backup will work without screen interaction. If you cannot safely unlock or approve the prompt, stop. Do not choose Restore or erase the phone as a way to make a backup.

If you choose an encrypted local backup, keep its password somewhere secure. Apple warns that the encrypted backup cannot be recovered without that password. Do not send this password, your device passcode or your Apple Account password in a repair quote.

If touch is gone, put data preservation first

A black or unresponsive screen does not prove the stored data is gone. It also does not prove that replacing the screen will restore access. The display, other damage, the phone’s security state and whether you know the passcode all matter.

Tell the shop before authorizing work that the phone contains files you cannot replace. We can evaluate the screen and the appropriate repair path, but we cannot promise access, a successful backup or data recovery before inspection. Do not use an erase-and-reset or a tool promising to bypass the lock just to test the phone.

What to put in your repair request

Send the exact iPhone model, what happened, whether a picture appears, whether touch works reliably and the last backup date you could verify. Mention liquid exposure, a bent frame, lifting glass or previous repair work. Say whether the priority is using the phone again, preserving its data, or both.

Davie and Tamarac accept online quote requests and have separate direct phone numbers. For Fort Lauderdale / Swap Shop, check the opening days before travelling: it is closed Monday and Tuesday. On those days, request a quote online and plan for Wednesday or contact another PRG store. Use the store links below to choose the right team.

Common questions

Can I back up an iPhone if its screen does not work?

Sometimes an existing backup or synced copy is already available. Making a new computer backup may still require unlocking the iPhone and approving Trust on its screen. Do not assume a cable or previously used computer bypasses those prompts.

Does having iCloud Photos mean I have a full iPhone backup?

No. Apple treats syncing and device backups separately. Confirm the specific photos you need and check the completed device-backup date when the phone can be used safely.

Should I restore the iPhone before screen repair?

Do not restore or erase it just to troubleshoot a broken screen when the data matters. Explain the backup situation and data priority before authorizing work.

Does replacing the screen guarantee my photos will be recovered?

No. Screen condition, other damage, the security state and passcode access all matter. Inspection is needed before the repair path or data access can be assessed.
