A key that types twice and a keyboard that types nothing are different problems. I would start by describing exactly what happens before ordering a keyboard or resetting the computer. A few safe observations can make the repair conversation much more useful.
If the trouble followed a liquid spill, or the laptop has unusual heat, a bulging case or a lifting keyboard or trackpad, shut it down and disconnect external power if safe. Stop using and charging it. Do not keep testing keys, add cleaning liquid or press a raised case flat.
Name the symptom before changing anything
On a cool, dry, undamaged laptop, try a short line of ordinary text in a blank document. Do not use a password field as your test. Note whether one key repeats, a group of keys stops responding, every key fails, or the wrong characters appear.
Compare another ordinary app. If the issue only appears in one program, tell us which one. If you already tried a compatible external keyboard, include that result. A working external keyboard is useful evidence, but it does not by itself identify the failed part.
- Exact laptop model and operating system
- Affected keys and whether the problem is constant or intermittent
- Any drop, spill, recent update or previous repair
- Whether the built-in keyboard, an external keyboard or both are affected
Check settings you may have changed accidentally
On a Mac, Apple points to Accessibility settings such as Slow Keys and Mouse Keys, along with the selected keyboard layout. Slow Keys can require a longer press before a character appears. Check whether those settings match how you intend to use the computer.
Microsoft explains that Sticky Keys, Filter Keys and related settings can change typing behavior on Surface devices. In Windows 11, review Settings, Accessibility, Keyboard. Preserve settings you rely on; an accessibility feature is not a fault just because it changes the response.
Record any setting you change so you can restore it. If the behavior continues, stop guessing at settings. Do not reset Windows or erase the Mac just to test a repeating key.
Do not pry off the key or pour in cleaner
A loose, cracked or missing key needs a different evaluation from an accidental setting. Do not force it back into place or pull nearby keys off to compare them. Tell us if a key feels sticky, sits unevenly or no longer moves normally.
Apple publishes a compressed-air procedure for specified MacBook and MacBook Pro models. Use the linked instructions only if your model and condition fit them; that procedure is not a treatment for liquid damage. If you are unsure, leave the keyboard alone and ask for an evaluation.
Microsoft also treats persistent repeated or missed keypresses on its Surface keyboards as a reason to seek service after the appropriate checks. That does not establish what is wrong with a different laptop or which replacement part it needs.
Get a quote with the right repair scope
We evaluate supported computer and MacBook problems at Davie, Tamarac and Fort Lauderdale / Swap Shop. Send the model, affected keys, what happened first and the checks you already tried. Keep passwords, recovery keys and personal documents out of the quote form.
Ask whether the proposed work concerns a key mechanism, keyboard assembly, connection, liquid damage or another fault—and what evidence supports it. Confirm the estimate, any diagnostic charge, parts availability, expected timing and written repair coverage before approving work. We cannot confirm the repair or outcome from the symptom alone.
If the computer is safe and usable, check your existing backup before service. If important files are inaccessible, say that preserving them is the priority. A keyboard quote is not permission to erase the computer. Use the store links below to call or plan a visit; Swap Shop is closed Monday and Tuesday.

Common questions
Does a repeated letter prove I need a new laptop keyboard?
No. Describe the exact keys and conditions first. Settings and hardware problems can affect typing, and the device needs evaluation before a repair is confirmed.
Should I remove a laptop key to clean underneath it?
Do not pry off keys as a troubleshooting step. Small mechanisms vary by model. Explain any debris, uneven key or spill and use only manufacturer guidance that fits your device.
What if the keys stopped working after a spill?
Shut down and disconnect external power if safe. Stop testing or charging the laptop and ask for an evaluation. A working key or a successful restart does not prove that the liquid caused no damage.
