If your PS5 opens Safe Mode or has no picture, I would pause before choosing a reset. First tell me what you can actually see: a working recovery menu, a no-signal message from the TV, or a console that keeps shutting down. Those details help separate the next sensible check from a step that could erase your saves.
Do not keep testing a wet, smoking or physically damaged console. If the HDMI socket is bent or loose, stop moving the cable. A menu option cannot repair damaged metal or a broken connection.
A recovery menu and a blank TV are different clues
A visible Safe Mode menu tells us the console can produce a picture in that mode. It does not prove that every video setting or internal component is working. If the TV only says no signal, do not select options blindly with the controller.
Write down the exact message and any error code. Tell us whether this began after an update, a power interruption, moving the console or an impact. Do not describe a guessed HDMI replacement as a confirmed diagnosis.
Read the option name before you confirm
Sony describes Change Video Output as a way to troubleshoot a blank display. Repair Console Storage is intended for startup or storage trouble and does not erase data. Restore Default Settings changes settings while retaining stored content. Reset PS5 erases user data; the reinstall option also removes the system software.
These options are not a checklist to run from top to bottom. Match the symptom to Sony’s official guidance, linked below. If the only offered path is a reset and you have unbacked-up saves, stop and discuss that risk before accepting it.
Back up while the normal menu still works
Sony’s USB backup path is Settings, System, System Software, Back Up and Restore. Use a supported FAT32 or exFAT drive with enough space and wait for the backup-complete message. Do not interrupt the console during backup or restoration.
A USB extended-storage drive used for games is not the same as a USB backup. Sony says games on extended USB or M.2 storage are excluded from the console backup, and trophies need separate synchronization. Restoring a backup erases the data currently on the console.
I would check what is actually saved before assuming the games, captures and progress are protected. If you cannot reach the normal menu, tell us that. We cannot promise to recover inaccessible or erased console data.
Stop when the fault keeps returning
If the menu returns after a restart, the picture keeps dropping, or an update repeatedly fails, record what happened and stop repeating the same attempt. Bring the error message and a list of steps already tried. That is more useful than another reset performed without a backup.
We evaluate supported console startup, power and HDMI problems. The fault, repair options and any data risk need to be assessed before we can confirm price or timing. This guide is preparation advice, not a claim that we inspected your console.

Common questions
Should I reset a PS5 just because the TV has no picture?
I would first establish whether the recovery menu is visible and whether the connector is damaged. A reset is not a diagnosis, and it can erase progress you wanted to keep.
What if I cannot make a backup?
Tell the shop before authorizing work. Record what the screen shows and avoid agreeing to an erase step without understanding the risk. Recovery is not guaranteed.
