Samsung Galaxy Side Button Not Working? Check This Before Repair

Darwin explains what to check when a Samsung Galaxy power or Side button is stuck, loose or unresponsive, and how to protect the phone and data before repair.

A Davie customer asked about a Galaxy A13 with a screen problem and a power-button repair. That message does not prove whether the fault is the outside button, a case blocking it, a setting, software or hardware inside the phone. I would stop forcing the button, note exactly what it still does and back up the phone before repair if it is safe and usable.

Safety first

Stop using or charging the phone if it is unusually hot, swollen, wet, bent, smoking, hissing, smells burned or is opening at the seams. Do not press a damaged button into the frame or use a pin, glue, liquid cleaner or heat around it.

Remove the case and check the button without forcing it

Samsung says a case, dust or other material can keep a Galaxy button from pressing normally. If the phone is safe, remove a loose case and check whether the Side and Volume buttons move without grinding, sticking or sinking into the frame. Do not scrape the gap with metal, spray cleaner into it or keep pressing hard to make it click.

A button that feels loose, sits below the frame, stopped working after a drop or only responds when pressed at an angle needs a physical evaluation. A software step cannot straighten a damaged frame or reconnect a broken internal part.

  • Exact Galaxy model or model number
  • Which button is affected
  • Whether it clicks, sticks, feels loose or sits low
  • What happened before the problem started
  • Any screen, frame, liquid or charging damage
  • Whether the important files are backed up

Describe which button action has failed

On many current Galaxy models, Samsung calls the power key the Side button. A short press can wake or lock the screen, a long press can open a chosen action, and a double press can launch a shortcut. The available actions vary by model and software version.

Tell us whether the phone cannot wake, lock, power on, open the power menu or use a double-press shortcut. Also test the Volume buttons only if the phone is safe. One failed action may be a setting; a button that does not move or respond at all may need hardware inspection.

Use Samsung diagnostics only when the phone is stable

Samsung’s current guidance says the Samsung Members app can run a Buttons diagnostic. Open Samsung Members, choose Support, start Phone diagnostics and select Buttons. Menu names can differ by model and software. Save the result or tell us what it reported.

Samsung also recommends checking for a software update. Do not start an update when the battery is swollen, the phone is wet, the screen is failing, power is unstable or the only copy of important data is at risk. A passed diagnostic does not repair a physically stuck or damaged button.

Know the temporary power-menu option

Samsung explains that many Galaxy phones can open the power menu from Quick settings by swiping down and tapping the Power icon. That may help you shut down a working phone without repeatedly pressing a bad Side button.

This is a temporary control option, not a repair. It will not help a phone that is already off and cannot power on. Do not rely on repeated cable connections, hard presses or improvised tools to work around a damaged button.

Back up the phone before service

If the phone is safe and usable, make and verify a current backup. Samsung Smart Switch can transfer supported contacts, photos, messages and other data, and it can create a computer backup. Confirm that the files you care about are included instead of assuming the backup finished.

On supported devices, Maintenance Mode can protect access to personal information during service, but it is not a backup. Keep your Samsung Account password, Google password, PIN and verification codes out of the quote form. If the button problem prevents a normal backup or shutdown, tell us before work begins.

Call the store with the exact model and symptoms

Call Davie at (954) 669-9588, Tamarac at (954) 999-9662, or the Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop at (954) 242-8277. Tell us the full Galaxy model, which button is affected, how it feels, what it still does and whether the phone also has screen, frame, liquid or charging damage.

I would not promise a button-only repair, part, price or completion time from a message. The correct repair path depends on the exact phone and what inspection finds.

Common questions

Why is the power button called the Side button on my Samsung phone?

On many newer Galaxy models, Samsung combines power and shortcut functions in one Side button. Its short-, long- and double-press actions can vary by model and settings.

Can a phone case make a Samsung Side button stop working?

Yes. Samsung recommends checking whether a case, dust or other material is blocking the button. Remove only a loose case from a safe phone and do not insert tools or liquid into the button gap.

Can Samsung Members test the phone buttons?

On supported Galaxy devices, Samsung Members includes a Buttons diagnostic under Support and Phone diagnostics. A result can help, but a physically stuck, loose or damaged button still needs inspection.

Do I need to erase my Galaxy before button repair?

Do not erase it merely because a button failed. Back up first when possible, use Maintenance Mode only on supported devices after protecting the data, and ask what preparation the chosen repair requires.
