Which iPad Do I Have? Find the Model Before a Repair Quote

Find your iPad model without guessing from its age or screen size. Darwin explains what to send for a screen, battery or charging repair quote when Settings is unavailable.

“It is about four years old” is a useful starting point, but it does not tell me which iPad you have. Before discussing a screen, battery or charging repair, I want the exact model and what stopped working. You do not need to erase it, open it or guess the generation to ask us for help.

Safety first

If the screen is lifting, the tablet is unusually hot, or the case or battery may be damaged, stop using and charging it. Do not press broken glass, force off a tight case or handle a damaged tablet just to read a number. Tell us the model is unknown and describe the condition.

If the screen works safely, check Settings

Apple’s instructions are Settings, General, About. The Model Number field initially displays a part number; tap it to reveal the model number. Record the model name and the number beginning with A. You can match that number against Apple’s iPad identification list linked below.

Send the model details as text. You do not need to send an entire About-screen screenshot with your serial number or account information. For a first quote request, the model and symptom are the useful starting details.

If Settings is unavailable, do not reset the iPad

Some iPads have the model number printed on the back. Apple says models without that marking may show it inside the USB-C or Lightning connector, on the side nearest the display. Use good overhead lighting and look only; do not put a pin, scraper or other tool into the connector.

If the marking is too small, obscured or unsafe to reach, leave it alone. Tell us whether you already know the iPad family, screen size or any model details from your purchase records. We can discuss identifying the device during evaluation. A black screen is not a reason to erase it just to find the model.

Age, size and “Pro” do not identify every version

Apple’s model list separates iPad, mini, Air and Pro, including different generations and Wi-Fi or cellular versions. Compare the complete model number instead of choosing a repair from a photo of a similar-looking tablet.

For example, “iPad Pro, third generation” still leaves out the screen size. A screen protector, case listing or approximate purchase year can help explain what you know, but I would not use that alone to confirm a repair part. Tell us when a detail is uncertain.

Describe what works, not just “screen replacement”

A model number identifies the device; it does not diagnose the fault. Tell us whether the glass is broken, the picture has lines or dark areas, touch stopped responding, or the tablet no longer powers on. Mention a drop, liquid exposure, frame damage or previous work.

If Apple Pencil use is part of the problem, include that in the request and ask whether to bring the Pencil. If charging is the problem, describe the cable and adapter you were using. Do not keep testing a damaged device to fill in every detail.

  • Model name and A-number, if safely available
  • Screen size and Wi-Fi or cellular version, if known
  • What you can see and what stopped working
  • Damage or repair history
  • Whether important files have a verified backup
  • Preferred store and any limits on how you can be reached

Agree on the repair before changing accounts or data

Ask us to confirm support for your exact model, the available repair options, the estimate, any diagnostic charge and the written coverage. Parts availability and timing need confirmation. A model lookup is not a promise that every fault is repairable.

Apple recommends backing up before service and keeping account passwords, passcodes and security details private. If the tablet cannot be used safely, explain that limitation instead of forcing a backup. For a PRG quote, start with identification and symptoms; agree on any data-affecting work before it begins.

Common questions

Can I request an iPad repair quote if I do not know the generation?

Yes. Say that the model is unknown and share the details you already know. Do not guess, erase the tablet or open it. Model confirmation and inspection may be needed before an estimate.

Is the number next to Model Number always the model number?

Apple says that field initially shows a part number. Tap it to display the model number, then compare it with Apple’s identification list.

Does a model number tell you whether I need a complete screen?

No. It identifies the device, while the symptoms and inspection determine the repair options. Describe the glass, image, touch response and any damage separately.
